British Championship Preview – 25th June

Written by Peter Savage

On June 25th the V8 Hotstox will roll into Bradford for the 2022 Billingham Removals sponsored British Championship. Current British Champion Steve Thompson (#1) will be attempting to win his third British Championship at the same track that he won the 2021 World Championship but there are several other drivers who will fancy their chances of taking home the trophy.

2022 has seen some brilliant racing from the V8 Hotstox and as the formula moves closer to its 40th anniversary it’s possible that the on track action this season has been better than ever before. Impressive car numbers at recent meetings means it is likely a big grid of cars will contest the British Championship and the V8 Hotstox certainly know how to put on a show at Odsal stadium!

Steve Thompson has been driving superbly with the gold roof and has shown good pace on both tarmac and shale. He won’t be backing down from any challengers and certainly knows the quickest way around the Odsal track.

“I've a good chance of bringing the trophy back home my shale form has picked up from last year I just need to survive the heats to be up near the front of the grid. My season so far has been fairly good picking a few wins along the way. I'm looking forward to the night bradford is great for the atmosphere and yorstox are putting alot into promoting the venue. Once again I'd like to thank my sponsors mjs recovery and son, acetech metals and my family with out them non it would be possible” - Steve Thompson 1

Jon Brown (#288) came incredibly close to claiming the 2021 World Championship at Bradford but came up short with a last bend attempt to take the win. Brown is never afraid to use the bumper and if there is any opportunity for a win on June 25th he’ll be sure to take it.

Stephen Young (#176) has had a sensational month of racing and is the current and first ever Scottish Champion. The sky is the limit for Young and he’ll certainly be one to watch in the British Championship race.

Matt Barnard (#69) performed superbly at Bradford earlier this season and if he can break away from the pack in the British Championship race it is unlikely he will be caught. The #69 car has a good chance of adding the black and white chequers to its roof by the end of the night.

Kevin Stuchbury (#131) is certainly no stranger to success in the V8 Hotstox formula. He will be a favourite to claim the victory but knows all too well how the Odsal track can bite back after a huge crash during 2021.

Craig Smith (#187) has had success on shale in 2022 after a fine final win at Northampton. He is a former British Champion and will be happy to punt any driver into the Odsal fence if the opportunity to win the British Championship is presented to him.

Amy Jagger (#525) is showing her pace at each and every meeting and is never afraid to mix it with the top drivers of the sport. She may well be the second lady to hold the British Championship if she can make a good start to the race.

These are just a few of the drivers that may be in with a chance of being the 2022 British Champion. The racing in the V8 Hotstox in 2022 has been highly competitive and unpredictable. Anybody could claim the title, Odsal stadium is certainly the place to be on June 25th!
